. . .Li-lan often paints canvases depicting one or two pages of a notebook. And her notebook is a landscape, delicate and serene: bright open space, shades of subdued color, almost imperceptible shadows, emphatically horizontal. In this landscape the air is aromatic – redolent, perhaps, with memories from childhood, perhaps with longing for calmer moments in this troubled world.
